The subcommittee heard testimony on the safety and regulation of breast implants. Specifically, the subcommittee sought to address the public concern over the safety of breast implants, which have been known to rupture after implantation in women’s bodies. The Food and Drug Administration decided in April 1992 to limit the availability of silicone-based breast implants until further investigations can be made on the safety of the operations. close
