The Public Affairs book group of Politics and Prose bookstore in Washington, DC meets on the last Monday of every month. For this discussion, the group read Chalmers Johnson’s "Blowback: The Costs and Consequences of American Empire, published by Henry Holt and Company. The book was first published in 2000 and examines the results of American foreign policy during the cold war. Blowback is a term referring to the unintended negative consequences of foreign and military policy that in Chalmers' view exploited many peoples and nations for the sake of stability. The discussion examines and critiques Chalmers' ideas, and explores the problems of spreading democracy to non-democratic nations. The book group included 20 participants who live in the Washington, DC area. The discussion is moderated by Todd La Porte, associate professor in the School of Public Policy at George Mason University in Virginia. close
