A panel discussion was held on memoirs and biographies of blacks in Nigeria, Harlem, Guyana, Jamaica, and Chicago’s Bronzeville. Topics included the effect of environment on experience and the validity of the concept of shared cultural experiences. The panelists responded to questions from members of the audience.

The moderator was Marie Umeh, author of Emerging Perspectives on Flora Mwapa: Critical and Theoretical Essays. The panelists were: Evelyn Bethune, author of Bethune: Out of the Darkness Into the Light of Freedom; Karen Quinones Miller, co-author of Harlem Godfather: The Rap on My Husband, Ellsworth Bumpy Johnson; Selwyn Cudjoe, author of Caribbean Visionary: A.R.F. Webber and the Making of the Guyanese Nation; Staceyann Chin, author of The Other Side of Paradise: A Memoir; and

Haki Madhubuti, author of Yellow Black: The First Twenty-One Years of a Poet’s Life - A Memoir.
