Lincoln Birthday Tribute
Richard Norton Smith spoke about Lincoln’s eloquence and his legacy. He also talked about other presidents. Craig Wallace read the Emancipation Proclamation which President Lincoln signed January 1, 1863. Dr. Allen Guelzo read his essay, “The Road to Emancipation,” with Avery Brooks reading the words of Abraham Lincoln in it.
President Bush thanked the preceding speakers and praised President Lincoln. He presented Dr. Benjamin Carson and former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor with the Ford’s Theatre Lincoln Medal.

First lady Laura Bush welcomed dignitaries and representatives of Ford’s Theatre and talked about President Lincoln’s love of the performing arts. She noted that February 12 is the 199th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth and that this White House event marks the beginning of a two-year commemoration of his bicentennial.
