British Home Secretary Charles Clarke and opponents testified before a House of Commons committee on anti-terrorism legislation recently introduced by the government. The bill included a proposal to extend detention periods for suspected terrorists from a few days to three months and would make it possible to ban groups that encourage terrorism. This was the first committee hearing on the bill since it was first published in September. close
