University of Michigan professor David Hancock talked about Edward Bernays and the rise of corporate public relations. Edward Bernays was a pioneer in the field of public relations and marketing. His beliefs were influenced by his uncle Sigmund Freud and he believed that public sentiment could be manipulated as a result of what he termed a “herd instinct.” Bernays was responsible for many notable public relations campaigns, especially his efforts in the 1930s to increase the numbers of women smokers for Lucky Strike cigarettes. close
