The subcommittee heard testimony on a proposal to extend unemployment insurance benefits, a $4.5 million measure that would fund 13 weeks of additional benefits for jobless workers whose benefits have run out. The bill would also increase funding for the emergency benefits that were created by Congress in November. Those benefits lasted for 13 or 20 weeks according to the severity of unemployment in each state, and they would begin running out in some states that next month. close
