Families and fellow service members held a remembrance service to honor the 241 service members killed 25 years ago in Beirut, Lebanon. On October 23, 1983, a

terrorist truck bomb exploded in a barracks, killing 220 Marines, 18 sailors, and 3 soldiers, and injuring many others. The remembrance service also honors those who participated 50 years ago during a similar 1958 Beirut operation. The special ceremony held at the Memorial near Jacksonville, N.C., featured guest speakers, wreath laying, and military band music.

The memorial in the Camp Lejeune Memorial Gardens, has a wall that includes the names of all the American service men killed during the multinational peacekeeping mission in Beirut, Lebanon, from 1982-84 and during the Grenada humanitarian rescue mission in October 1983. close
