Moderated by William Fowler, Director of the Massachusetts Historical Society, panelists discussed archives, archival research and their own use of archives in writing their books. Richard Pipes shared stories about doing archival research in Russia for his book The Unknown Lenin. Pauline Maier described her use of archives in England for her book From Resistance to Revolution and the value of alternative sources of primary research. Blanche Wiesen Cook talked about suing the United States government to obtain information for her book The Declassified Eisenhower and the recent policies of the Bush administration pertaining to archival access. All of the panelists answered questions from members of the audience following their remarks. close
