Attorney General Ashcroft and others testified about the Department of Justice’s work and formulation of legal policies for the interrogation and detention of enemy combatants held at facilities in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Among the topics addressed were the degree of consultation with Bush administration lawyers, the definition of torture, and justification for using some forms of coercive interrogation. In his testimony, Mr. Ashcroft disavowed the practice of coersive interrogation, but defended White House officials who had pressed the case for such methods. He also responded to questions about attorney hiring practices at the Department of Justice and the degree to which hiring became politicized under the Bush administration. close
