Thomas Barnett talked by video uplink from Indianapolis about U.S. military operations in Africa and his recent experiences there. His article titled “The Americans Have Landed” appeared in the July issue of Esquire Magazine. In it he wrote about the new regional military command in Africa announced earlier this year that commits U.S. troops to the continent on a permanent basis. In March 2007 he traveled to Djibouti and Manda Bay, a new American base along Kenya’s eastern coast, to observe the new mission firsthand. Thomas P.M. Barnett is the author of The Pentagon’s New Map: War and Peace in the Twenty-First Century and Blueprint for Action: A Future Worth Creating, published by Putnam. Mr. Barnett responded to questions from callers.

At the beginning of the program there was a period where the telephone lines were open for comments while waiting for the connection with Mr. Barnett to be established. close
