The Arizona Historical Foundation held a conference "Goldwater at 100: His Politics, Ideology and Legacy," November 13, 2009, at University Club of Arizona State University. Barry Goldwater (1909-1998) was a five-term United States senator from Arizona (1953-1965, 1969-1987) and the Republican Party's nominee for president in the 1964 election. The concluding panel was titled "Beyond 1964 and Goldwater Conservatism." Each panelist presented a paper, sometimes accompanied by slides. Moderator Nelson Lichtenstein made comments. Then the panelists responded to questions from members of the audience.
The papers presented were: Joseph Crespino on "Goldwater in Dixie: Rhetoric and Reality in the Growth of the Postwar Republican South;" William Link on "Jesse Helms, Barry Goldwater, and the Dynamic of Modern Conservatism;" Drew Meyers on "Barry Goldwater, Conservative Politics, and Senior Rights, 1969-1978;" and Brian Allen Drake, University of Georgia, on "The Skeptical Environmentalist: Barry Goldwater and Federal Environmentalism."
