The committee heard testimony from banking industry representatives and members of consumer watchdog groups on the impact of the merger of large banking institutions on the banking industry and consumers. In 1991, following the lead of Chemical Bank and Manufacturers Hanover, several large banks announced plans to merge, creating fewer and larger financial institutions. Witnesses testified on the effect of the large mergers on smaller banks and banking consumers, including additional regulatory proposals to handle the larger banks. close
