The House Banking, Finance and Urban Affairs Committee heard testimony on the predicted effects of large bank mergers on the banking industry, and the American economy, from three administration officials. Earlier in the year, two large banking institutions, Chemical Bank and Manufacturers Hanover, proposed a merger which Committee Chairman Henry Gonzalez (D-TX) said incited a large number of other banks to consider mergers. The consolidation of large banks created questions as to the application of antitrust laws and Federal banking regulations to the new institutions. close
