Immigration Backlash

This was a portion of the Unity '94 conference of minority journalists. This session involving hispanic journalists focused on the recent backlash against immigration, especially illegal immigration, from hispanic countries in the United States. Ms. Alverio, Mr. Dominguez, and Ms. Arocha opened this session with brief remarks. Ms. Gonzalez introduce the panelists and made opening remarks about the topic under discussion. Before, the panelist began their presentations, there was a brief video presentation produced by Telemundo about discrimination against hispanics in the United States. Mr. Estrada spoke about the fundamental need for a complete debate on U,S. immigration policy and the responsiblity of journalists to inform the public about this issue. Mr. Gutierrez spoke about the harshness of the I.N.S. and the debate in California over the fundiing of services for illegal immigrants.
