Professor Lewis talked about his book, From Babel to Dragomans: Interpreting the Middle East, published by Oxford University Press. He described major events that have shaped the Middle East over the past 300 years. He also talked about how such terms as freedom and justice have been re-interpreted in the region and analyzed the reaction to Western-influenced modernization. He talked about the prospects for democracy in Iraq and the influence of Wahabi Islam in Europe and the United States. After his presentation he answered audience members' questions. close
