A medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters was bestowed on Arthur Miller, writer of more than 40 plays, screenplays, novels, and collections of essays. The master of ceremonies was comedian, actor, and writer Steve Martin. The chair of each genre panel presented the award to each winner. Ms. Wolff is the author of True Believer. Mr. Solomon is the author of The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression. Mr. Franzen is the author of The Corrections. Mr. Dugan, author of Poems Seven: New and Complete Poetry, was unable to come up on the stage. The National Book Awards are sponsored by a consortium of book publishing groups to recognize American writers in the genres of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and young people’s literature. close
