Panelists presented their arguments for the book most worthy of the National Book Award in 1902, some fifty years before the actual award was created. The books up for consideration were The Varieties of Religious Experience by William James (Cox), Owen Wister’s The Virginian (Funkhouser), and Helen Keller’s The Story of My Life (Pinker).
