A hearing was held on pending legislation about the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for automobile gasoline mileage. Witnesses testified about current fuel efficiency, research and development efforts by manufacturers, the potential costs to consumers of improvements, environmental benefits of better efficiency, and potential impact on energy supplies and policy.
