President Obama urged Congress to pass short-term legislation to cut spending and increase tax revenue so that sequestration could be delayed for a few months. He said the economy was moving in the right direction, but Congress needed more time to come up with a “balanced mix of spending cuts and tax reform.”

“Sequestration,” a legal procedure in which automatic budget cuts are triggered, was agreed to in the Budget Control Act of 2011. They were originally to happen on January 1, 2013, but were delayed until March 1, 2013. close
