Witnesses testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committee about automotive repair technology. They discussed the rise of proprietary diagnostic technology in automobiles, and spoke about how this has impacted the automotive repair industry. Witnesses noted that since automobile emissions restrictions were tightened in the 1990s, automobile manufacturers have increasingly integrated computers into their products, and that these computers place independent repair shops at a competitive disadvantage compared to dealerships. They also discussed the impact on consumers and aftermarket parts manufacturers. Witnesses responded to questions from committee members. close
