This ceremony was held to review the career of Defense Secretary Aspin. The secretary was presented with the Department of the Army’s Distinguished Civilian Service Award, as well as awards from the Department of the Air Force, Department of the Navy and the Department of Transportation. Secretary Aspin announced last year that he would step down as Secretary of Defense as soon as a successor was named. On Thursday, Deputy Defense Secretary designate William Perry was approved by the Senate by a vote of 97-0 and was sworn into office the same day. close
