Arctic and Deepwater Oil Exploration

Panelists talked about the science and safety concerns associated with oil exploration in ultra-deepwater areas and in the Arctic. Topics included the Arctic’s geology and environment, the effects of climate change, and disaster response in both Arctic and ultra-deepwater oil production areas. Michael Bromwich, former director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy, Management, Regulation and Enforcement, said the U.S. has improved its response to oil spills since the Deepwater Horizon incident on the Gulf Coast in 2010.

“Navigating the Frontier: Science and Safety Concerns” was a panel at “Navigating the Oil Frontier: The Implications of the Tight Oil Boom on Arctic and Ultra-Deepwater Oil Development,” an event on energy development held by the Bipartisan Policy Center at the Washington Court Hotel.
