Joby Warrick was interviewed by telephone for the fifth anniversary of the anthrax scare on Capitol Hill when on October 12, 2001, a staffer in then Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle’s office opened a letter containing anthrax spores. Other letters were sent to Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), NBC’s Tom Brokaw, and other media outlets. A number of postal workers died as a result of the mailings. The case remains unsolved. close
