Panelists talked about how the media had covered America’s first ladies throughout the years and how first ladies tried to craft their image in the media. They examined how first ladies used their position to champion certain causes, the evolution of media coverage of them, and how historical events redefined their role. Richard Norton Smith and Cokie Roberts gave historical and modern perspectives while Krissah Thompson talked about covering Michelle Obama. They also talked about the C-SPAN series, “First Ladies: Influence and Image,” co-sponsored by the White House Historical Association, which was about to begin its second season. A trailer for the series was shown. The panelists also responded to questions from members of the audience. close
