Robert Clinton talked about the history of treaties between Native Americans and non-native settlers. He traced the evolution of Anglo-American treaties and how they shifted from relationship agreements in the colonial era to the modern sovereign agreements with the federal government. He argued that treaties with the U.S. government simultaneously stand for Indian rights and oppression. Mr. Clinton also served as the chief justice of the Winnebago Tribe’s Supreme Court.

This event is a portion of a symposium hosted by the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. and includes introductory remarks from Montana Senator Jon Tester. close
