Lucas Powe, Jr., talked about his book The Supreme Court and the American Elite, 1789-2008 (Harvard University Press; April 17, 2009). In his book he argues that major Supreme Court decisions going back to the very earliest cases have, however framed in constitutional terms, reflected the views of the most powerful people in the country at the time although often decried in later years. He responded to questions from members of the audience.

Lucas A. Powe, Jr., former clerk for Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, is a professor of government at the University of Texas at Austin and holds the Anne Green Regents Chair in Law. His books include American Broadcasting and the First Amendment, The Fourth Estate and the Constitution, and The Warren Court and American Politics.

This event of the 2009 Texas Book Festival was held Sunday, November 1, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. CT in room E2.016 of the Capitol Extension in Austin. close
