John Updike, the Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist and critic, delivered the 37th Annual Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities, “The Clarity of Things: What Is American about American Art?” in the Warner Theatre. Mr. Updike showed slides of art works as he talked about how they related to American history and the character of the American people. He also gave background information about the artists, their realtionship to other artists and their time period, and cited other critics. He talked about how American art and the history and ideas they communicate about our founding and other important periods in our nation is vital to American citizens.
