This week on America and the Courts: Free Speech Rights for High School Students
On March 19 attorneys spoke with reporters on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court after arguing the case of Morse v. Frederick. At issue was whether high school principal Deborah Morse in Juneau, Alaska, violated student Joseph Frederick’s free speech rights by suspending him for a banner that read “Bong Hits 4 Jesus.”
The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals heard oral arguments in D.B. v. Lafon in Cincinnati on January 23. In this case, students at the William Blount High School in Maryville, Tennessee, were told to take off T-shirts with the Confederate flag symbol or risk suspension. The students complied but filed suit against the principal and school board for violating their free speech rights.
