On Thursday, September 29, 2005 John Roberts was sworn in as the 17th Chief Justice of the United States at the White House. He was confirmed by a vote of 78 to 22 with the support of all 55 Senate Republicans, 22 Democrats and Independent Senator Jeffords. Associate Justice John Paul Stevens, the longest serving member of the U.S. Supreme Court, swore him in.
Also shown was a political ad created by Progress for America commenting on the confirmation process and urging a non-partisan confirmation for the next nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court.
On Friday, September 30, 2005 New York Times reporter Judith Miller spoke to reporters after her testimony before a grand jury on an investigation into the leak of a CIA operative’s name by White House officials. She was freed Thursday, September 29, 2005 after being jailed for 85 days at a Virginia federal detention center.
On April 30, 2005 Fourth Circuit Judge Harvie Wilkinson spoke about the legacy of Chief Justice John Marshall. He discussed the fourth U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice’s life, decisions, and impact on both the nation and the courts. The John Marshall Foundation hosted this event in Richmond, Virginia.
