Juan Gonzalez, co-host of "Democracy Now!" and Joseph Torres, senior director of external affairs for Free Press, present a history of race and the American media. The authors examine the role that segregation played in how the news was reported and argue that the media was often culpable for cultivating acts of racial violence. The authors also profile several minority journalists and report on their struggles in creating a more diverse press corps. Amy Goodman, co-host and executive producer of "Democracy Now!" moderated a discussion about their book on stage at the Great Hall of the Cooper Union in New York City. This book launch event by "Democracy Now!" and Free Press was part of "Democracy Now!'s" 15th anniversary celebration event series.
