The American Muslim Council held a news conference to talk about events in Algeria. Last week, Algerian President Chadli Bendjedid resigned after his party lost the country’s parliamentary elections to the Islamic Salvation Front, a Muslim fundamentalist party. Following Bendjedid’s resignation, a group calling itself the High State Council took over the president’s duties and canceled the second round of voting that would have given the Muslims firm control of the Algerian parliament. The council’s action has caused a measure of civil unrest in the northern African nation. close
