Federal officials, airline company executives, and labor representatives testified about airline pension plans. They were questioned about airline business practices, invoking the May bankruptcy of American Airlines in which its pension obligations were allowed to fall back on the federal Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation. Each airline chief executive pledged not to permit executive pensions to be protected while workers' pensions were not. Other topics included transparency, insecure pensions in many U.S. businesses, and changes needed in pension law. close
