Committee members heard testimony concerning the safety of automobile air bags. The National Highway Safety Traffic Administration recently introduced several new safety requirements for air bags after reports showed they are dangerous to small children and women. This portion contains the first two panels consisting of Transportation Department officials and automobile industry representatives. The witnesses testified about the dangers of air bags to small children and what the auto industry is doing to correct the problems, especially using less powerful deployment mechanisms. close
