Orville Vernon Burton talked about his book The Age of Lincoln, published by Hill and Wang. The book deals with the cultural, political, social, and economic background to Lincoln’s presidency. Professor Burton argues that President Lincoln’s great accomplishment was not just the emancipation of slaves but a broadening of the principle of personal liberty protected by a body of law. In his view the “Age of Lincoln” followed the “Age of Jackson” in American history. He was interviewed at the University of Illinois by the C-SPAN BookTV Bus crew.
