Sociologist and author Jane Jacobs discussed her book Dark Age Ahead, published by Random House. The book examines five key aspects of modern life that the author sees as the pillars of a successful culture, all of which seem to her to be in serious decline. These pillars are scientific progress, family, taxes and government, pursuit of higher education, and self-policing. Ms. Jacobs writes that at the base of this downfall are racism, the widening gap between the wealthy and poor, and environmental problems, which the author claims if left unaided will result in cultural decay. After the discussion, Ms. Jacobs responded to questions from the audience.
