University of Pennsylvania Law School professor, Lani Guinier, whom President Clinton nominated and later withdrew as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, spoke about the need for reframing the debate over affirmative action from the current discourse over reverse discrimination and quotas. She argued that affirmative action offers an opportunity both to rethink rigid approaches and to reaffirm the contradiction between pluralistic democracy and a winner-take-all society. After her remarks, she took questions from the audience. close
