President Bush delivered his seventh and last State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress. C-SPAN coverage of the event included interviews with journalists, members of Congress, and others prior to the address. Richard Norton Smith talked about the history of the State of the Union address, focusing on the ways modern two-term presidents used their final State of the Union addresses and featuring video clips of Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Johnson, Reagan and Clinton’s last speeches. Representatives Ray LaHood and Ike Skelton were interviewed from Statuary Hall about their recollections of previous addresses they witnessed. Gavel-to-gavel coverage of the House was shown of preparations, gathering for the speech, President Bush’s address, and the Democratic Party response by Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius by remote connection from Topeka. Reactions of other members of Congress were shown and the telephone lines were opened for viewer comments. close
