Adrian Wooldridge discussed the book he co-wrote titled, The Company: A Short History of a Revolutionary Idea, published by Random House. Mr. Wooldridge asserts that originally, creating a business entity with some of the rights and characteristics of a person allowed insolvent governments to secure the capital necessary for ventures such as imperialism. Companies have since evolved, grown and diversified with many becoming mega-corporations in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. However, Mr. Wooldridge points out, large corporations are steadily losing their power, as the 5.5 million small companies in the U.S. become the norm. He also discusses the issue of corporate social responsibility. Daniel Yergin, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Prize: The Epic Quest for Oil, Money and Power, then commented on Mr. Wooldridge’s book. Following the presentations both panelists responded to questions from members of the audience, moderated by Mr. Lindsey.
