Historian Steven Ujifusa recounts the life of naval architect William Francis Gibbs and his creation of the SS United States, a passenger liner that carried more than one million people across the Atlantic over two decades. The ship, completed in 1952, was viewed as a technological advancement in sea travel with speeds of 35 knots 41 miles per hour and as an achievement for America’s engineering and manufacturing sectors. Steven Ujifusa was interviewed by Matt Golas and also responded to questions from members of the audience at the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia. Topics included the state of efforts to conserve the ship. This was the official book launch by Simon & Schuster, co-sponsored by the museum. close
