In a forum sponsored by the Journal of Commerce and Traffic World magazine, speakers discussed airline safety concerns, from the perspectives of both the American consumer and the American airport employee. Mr. Bell said air flight traffic controllers are actually doing more in their daily job performance than ever before with less funding for controller training and equipment. He criticized the FAA for claiming the U.S. airline industry has more controllers than ever before, and for forcing operators to work with drastically inadequate equipment for the job. Mr. O’Brien spoke on the Airline Pilot Association’s work toward improving airline safety, made more difficult by the bureaucracy of the FAA and the reluctance of the airlines to spend money on even the simplest safety devices for airline pilots and passengers. close
