Witnesses testified about the FBI’s role in the investigation of TWA Flight 800 which exploded soon after takeoff in 1996. The first panel of National Transportation Safety Board officials complained that the FBI had been too forceful in trying to prove that a bomb was responsible for the accident and had assumed too much control of the investigation. Andrew Vita of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms testified that he met resistance when he tried to submit a report concluding that a mechanical flaw ignited the explosion. Donald Kerr and and Lewis Schiliro of the FBI vigorously opposed the charges against the FBI saying the investigation was “professional, responsible and methodical.” close
