Michael Dukakis and George H. W. Bush spoke at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Dinner. The annual charity event was the last scheduled appearance of the presidential candidates on the same stage before the November election and offered an opportunity for each candidate to make humorous remarks about themselves, the other candidate, and the election campaign.
