President Clinton’s Advisory Board on Race held its first meeting in its yearlong effort to develop a report on race relations in the United States. The members of the board talked about their goals and their hopes for the mission of the board. Mr. Franklin called the task of the board “daunting” and “awesome” and defined it as reducing and destroying the impact of racial discrimination and degradation that has permeated since the middle of the 17th century.
