Alexis de Tocqueville, the author of Democracy in America, and his traveling companion Gustave de Beaumont arrived in New York City on May 11, 1831. As part of a series retracing his journey, Professor Jim Schleifer talked about Tocqueville’s reaction to the steamboat ride from Newport and his reaction to New York City. Non-resident journalists also talked about their modern-day reactions to New York City and took questions from callers. Live shots of Battery Park in New York were shown. The guests participated by remote connection. close
