The life and career of Justice Hugo Black was profiled through interviews with his son, his biographer and others on the 25th anniversary of his death. Justice Black was a member of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1937 to 1971. He was a Democratic member of the U.S. Senate from 1927 to 1937 until nominated to the Court by President Roosevelt. There was a controversy at the time because he had been a member of the Ku Klux Klan. Judge Oberdorfer was a law clerk for Justice Black. Mr. Newman is the author of Hugo Black: A Biography, published by Pantheon Books. Mr. Eagle critiqued Justice Black’s influence on the Court. Mr. Wigdor discussed Justice Black’s lifetime collection of papers which are at the Library of Congress. close
