The committee held a hearing on Persian Gulf War Syndrome. Gulf war veterans, researchers and medical experts testified about the effects of exposure to chemical agents on veterans during the 1991 Persian Gulf War, specifically the explosion of a chemical weapons storage site in Kamisiyah in March 1991. Government administrators also testified about how they have handled veterans' illnesses since the war ended. Several members sharply criticized them for grossly mishandling the situation. The Department of Defense now estimates that as many as 5,000 soldiers may have been exposed to chemical agents during this period. This portion features testimony from Department of Defense officials and medical experts on the effects of chemical and biological weapons.
