Mr. Kantor and others briefed reporters on the first evaluation report of the U.S.-Japan automobile trade agreement, which was concluded in late June. They emphasized that the report demonstrates that the agreement is opening the Japanese auto market to U.S. companies. They also said that it shows that U.S. companies can compete in tough markets if given the opportunity. After his remarks, on U.S.-Japan trade, President Clinton nominated Trade Representative Kantor to succeed Ron Brown as Secretary of Commerce and Frank Raines to succeed Alice Rivlin as Director of the Office of Management and Budget.
