Historians and scholars discussed the public and private lives of President McKinley. Viewers also participated in the discussion by telephone. During his term, the U.S. declared war on Spain after the battleship Maine mysteriously blew up in Havana harbor. President McKinley was shot on September 6, 1901 by Leon Czolgosz. He died eight days later. The museum’s McKinley room, with its various period furnishings, personal effects and wax figures, was also shown.
