President Clinton, Senator Dole and other congressional leaders spoke at a tribute to Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell of Maine. Senator Mitchell announced earlier this year that he will not be seeking re-election, ending his fourteen year career in the Senate. President Clinton called Senator Mitchell a true leader, one who tries to achieve what he believes is right. He added that Mitchell has “never lost the common touch,” and that he has been able to retain the trust and confidence of the people who sent him to the Senate.
